FAQs Related To Reproduction & Copyright Topics

Question: What is the mandatory deposit obligation?

Answer: Mandatory deposit is a legal obligation (17 U.S.C. section 407) and applies to all U.S. and foreign publishers distributing their works in the United States.

Question: How do I register my copyright?

Answer: To register a work, submit a completed application form, a nonrefundable filing fee of $45, and a nonreturnable copy or copies of the work to be registered.

Question: If my publication does not have a copyright notice, do I still have to deposit?

Answer: Yes. On March 1, 1989, the qualification "with notice of copyright" was eliminated from the mandatory deposit provision (Public Law 100-568).

Copyrights FAQs

Question: Do I have to register with your office to be protected?

Answer: No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.
